Provenance: private collection.
This work belongs to the tradition of 17th-century Dutch painters, and more specifically to the legacy of Philips Wouwerman, master of equestrian and battle scenes. It can be attributed to his circle or circle of artists active at the end of the 17th century. It retains his characteristic elements, notably: at the heart of the scene is a rearing white horse, accompanied by a group of riders in motion—an iconographic signature of Wouwerman—with a color palette that favors warm browns and silvery grays.
Philips Wouwerman, also known as Philipp Wouwermann, was a Flemish painter born in 1619 in Haarlem, Netherlands, and died in 1668 in Haarlem, Netherlands. Philips Wouwerman belonged to the Baroque artistic style. He was primarily active during the Classical period of the 17th century.
